History of the West Greene FFA Chapter
Founding and Early Years (1966-1970s)
The West Greene FFA chapter was established in 1966, following the consolidation of Mosheim and McDonald high schools into West Greene High School in Greene County, Tennessee. This change brought together students from different agricultural backgrounds, laying the foundation for a strong Future Farmers of America (FFA) program at the newly formed school.
FFA, originally founded at the national level in 1928, aims to develop students' agricultural knowledge, leadership skills, and career readiness. West Greene High School embraced these principles, and from its inception, the FFA chapter at the school became an integral part of the community and student life.
During its early years, the chapter focused on traditional farming practices, including crop cultivation, livestock management, and agricultural mechanics. Students participated in hands-on training, and early members were involved in competitions such as livestock judging, public speaking, and parliamentary procedure.
Growth and Expansion (1980s-1990s)
As agriculture and farming techniques evolved, so did the curriculum and activities of the West Greene FFA. The 1980s and 1990s saw a shift toward agribusiness, environmental science, and mechanized agriculture. The chapter expanded its offerings, introducing projects in welding, woodworking, and small animal care.
West Greene FFA students also began participating in state and national FFA conventions, where they competed in leadership and skill-based events. The chapter built strong relationships with the Greene County agricultural community, including local farmers, businesses, and extension services, which provided mentorship and support for students.
Additionally, the chapter gained recognition for its involvement in community service projects, such as organizing local fairs, farm safety demonstrations, and food drives.
Modernization and Continued Success (2000s-Present)
In the 21st century, the West Greene FFA has continued to thrive, adapting to the changing agricultural landscape. The chapter offers a diverse range of courses and extracurricular activities, including:
Agriscience and Environmental Studies – Students conduct research on soil conservation, water quality, and plant science.
Technical Training – Programs in welding, electrical work, plumbing, and machinery operation prepare students for careers in agricultural engineering and related fields.
Horticulture and Landscaping – Students grow and cultivate plants, gaining experience in greenhouse management and floral design.
Livestock and Animal Science – The chapter continues to compete in livestock judging contests, while also incorporating small animal care and veterinary science into its curriculum.
Career Development Events (CDEs) – Students participate in competitions such as public speaking, job interview skills, agronomy, and sales.
The chapter has also embraced technological advancements, incorporating precision agriculture, drone technology, and data analysis into its coursework.
A significant aspect of the West Greene FFA’s success has been the support of the West Greene FFA Alumni Association, which provides scholarships, mentorship, and financial assistance for students. In 2023, the alumni received a Legacy Partnering Grant from the National FFA Alumni and Supporters, funded by Tractor Supply Company, to further invest in student development.
Community Impact and Future Vision
The West Greene FFA remains a cornerstone of the Greene County agricultural community. The chapter not only prepares students for careers in agriculture but also emphasizes leadership, public service, and personal growth. Through partnerships with local businesses, educational institutions, and the broader FFA organization, West Greene FFA continues to provide students with the skills and experiences necessary for future success.
Looking forward, the chapter aims to expand its programs in sustainable agriculture, agribusiness management, and advanced agricultural technologies. With strong community backing and a legacy of excellence, the West Greene FFA is well-positioned to continue shaping the next generation of agricultural leaders.
Since 1966 there has been many successful students to go thru West Greene FFA from farmers to Doctors and everything in between. Many awards and scholarships have been awarded to the students of Western Greene County. West Greene had the first ever (that we know of) National Profiencey Winner in Greene County in 2007. West Greene has been fortunate enough to have only a handful of Agriculture educators and FFA Advisors.
